Dragon*Con is one of the world’s largest popular culture conferences, held every year in Atlanta, Georgia. This year, Australian Skeptics was represented by Rachael Dunlop, Richard Saunders and Steve Roberts from the NSW committee as well as fellow skeptics Kylie Sturgess from Perth and Martin Bridgestock from QLD.
Dragon*Con is held over the Labour Day holiday weekend across 4 hotels and ~55,000 people walk through the doors in all manner of costumes, from storm troopers to, well not much at all!
This year was a bumper year for the Australians at Dragon*Con with the five Australians participating in over 12 panels and talks on the Science, Skeptic and Silk Road Tracks.
Richard Saunders, Rachael Dunlop and Kylie Sturgess appeared on “The Skeptic Zone Live” in the main Skeptic Track room with special guests Daniel Loxton from Jr. Skeptic and singer and podcaster George Hrab.
Over at the Science Track, Kylie Sturgess joined Martin Bridgestock to discuss some of their research into the paranormal beliefs of Australians. Steve Roberts also gave a talk on computer security in the banking industry.
Heading back to the Skeptic Track, Richard and Rachael gave a performance of their show for schools, ‘The Mystery Investigators’, the first time this show has been staged in the USA.
This year the video of the Skeptic Track was live streamed over the internet to an international audience with many people watching from Australia.
The Australians will be back at Dragon*Con in 2010. If you are thinking of attending be warned. Hotels such as the Hilton book out almost a year in advance. If you wish to find out more, visit the official web site of Dragon*Con here.
