With the end of the world predicted on December 21 this could possibly be the last meeting of this kind ever. Peter Bowditch will try to raise people’s hopes by looking at failed apocalyptic predictions from the past to see if there is a pattern to their failure which might suggest survival beyond the coming solstice. As insurance, he will go back over his Y2K notes for suggestions about the best forms of canned food to stock in your bunker and the best ways to store ammunition so that it doesn’t deteriorate before it is needed to kill neighbours or zombies.

Joking aside, there have been reports of people abandoning their jobs and houses and threatening to kill themselves and their families over the December prediction. Not all nonsense is harmless.

Peter was press-ganged on to the Australian Skeptics committee following the national convention in 1999 and has been there ever since, even being Vice President and President at various times. He writes about skepticism, science and common sense in various places such as The Skeptic magazine, Australasian Science and his own web site at ratbags.com. His main target for some time has been medical quackery and the anti-vaccination movement but he is eclectic in his skepticism and has taken on religious bigotry and creationism as well as other examples of illogical and incorrect thinking.

He lives in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney where non-organic foods containing meat, gluten, GMO products, peanuts and dairy have to be ordered in and delivered at night from unmarked vans. His is the only car in the street without a “Magic Happens” sticker but he carries a crystal in the glovebox just in case.
