Skeptics award winner is 2016 WA Young Australian of the Year

Catherine Hughes

Catherine Hughes, who set up the Light for Riley Facebook page with her husband Greg in honour of their four-week-old son who died of whooping cough, has been named 2016 WA Young Australian of the Year.

As recently as October, the Hughes were given the Australian Skeptics’ Thornett Award for the Promotion of Reason. The award acknowledges a member of the public or a public figure who has made a significant contribution to educating or informing the public regarding issues of science and reason. In addition to a commemorative certificate, $1000 is awarded to the recipient or to a charity or cause of their choice.

The Hughes set up the page to highlight the importance of vaccination, particularly of adults where infants are too young to be immunised themselves.
