The June issue of The Skeptic magazine includes a special feature on “science pretenders” – proponents of pseudoscience riding on the coattails of genuine science. Articles in the feature include discussions on how to differentiate science from pseudoscience; the misuse of scientific concepts and terms, particularly the much-abused “quantum”; the story behind the recent documentary Science Friction, on the use and abuse of scientists and their expertise in mass media; and a close look at pseudoarchaeology and popular culture.
Other articles in the issue look at the Hall of Shame of alt med purveyors and the role (or lack of it) of official regulators.
A news report on the Australian [anti]Vaccination Network’s run-in with the courts, where its self-proclaimed “leading organisation” reputation in the anti-vax market suffered a set-back, to say the least, is available as a sample from the June issue. You can read the report here.
